When you leave the University, important information, such as details about your employee and retirement benefits, tax documents and more, is sent to your home address and personal email. Review below for how to update your contact information and what to expect after employment ends.

Update Contact Information on File in myHR

  • Make sure your addresses are up-to-date in by selecting "My Personal Details."
    • Update mailing address under "Addresses" and email address under "Contact Details," both on the left-hand menu.
    • When updating email address, select email address type "Home."
  • For assistance, contact the HR Service Center.
    • To protect your privacy, verbal address changes are not accepted.

Final Paycheck

Your final paycheck will be direct deposited to the same bank account used for payroll deposits and includes all pay for the final pay period worked. Withholdings on final paycheck include:

  • Outstanding insurance premiums
  • Retirement contributions
  • Applicable taxes

On the pay cycle following your final earnings check, you will receive payment for any banked vacation hours and up to 80 hours of PTO.


Insurance

Depending on your insurance enrollments, you will receive transition information from the insurance administrator(s) via postal mail. This information will include instructions and any necessary forms. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date to ensure you receive this information.

Medical, Dental and/or Vision

You and your covered dependents may be eligible to continue your health coverage for up to 18 months if your original coverage ends due to a reduction in work hours or termination of employment (unless it's for gross misconduct) per the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

  • If you're eligible, the University's COBRA administrator will send you an enrollment packet.
  • To continue your benefits under COBRA, you'll need to follow the instructions in the packet to return the enrollment forms and payment by the deadline provided.

Life

You may elect to convert or port life insurance policies without providing proof of insurability.

  • The University's life insurance administrator will mail a packet of information with your options. Please allow up to two weeks following your last day worked to receive the packet.
  • To convert or port your coverage, follow the instructions in the packet complete and submit the required form(s) within 31 calendar days of your last day worked.
  • If you do not receive your notice within two weeks following your departure, please contact the HR Service Center.

Savings and Payment Accounts

You will receive transition information from the account administrator(s). This information will include instructions and any necessary forms. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date to ensure you receive this information. 

Health Payment Account (HPA)

Information provided by : Due to recent changes to your employment status, your eligibility for an employer-sponsored Paytient account has ended and any associated Paytient card you may have will be deactivated. Here’s what you need to know: 

  • Outstanding Balances
    You remain responsible for repaying any amounts charged to your Paytient card. Please log in to the Paytient app to update your payment method for outstanding balances to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Keeping in Touch
    Paytient will send additional information regarding your account to the email associated with the account. If your Paytient account is currently linked to your work email, we highly recommend updating it to a personal email address to continue accessing and receiving communications regarding the account.

Retirement Plans

Based on your core retirement plan when you leave the university, you will receive plan details and instructions via postal mail from university, Fidelity (the university's retirement plan administrator), or both. This information will include instructions and any necessary forms. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date to ensure you receive this information. 

Defined Benefit Plan

  • A packet containing information about your benefit, including election forms, will be mailed to you by the university.
  • No action is required on your part until you receive the packet. Please allow up to six months following your departure to receive your packet.
  • If you have questions in the meantime, please contact the HR Service Center

Hybrid Plan

  • Defined benefit component: You will receive a packet from the University via mail following the process outlined in the Defined Benefit Plan section above.
  • Defined contribution component: You will receive a letter from Fidelity via postal mail as described in the Defined Contribution Plan section below.

Defined Contribution Plan

  • You will receive a letter with information about your benefit, including options, from Fidelity via postal mail.
  • No action is required on your part until you receive the packet. Please allow up to 60 days following your departure to receive information.

Voluntary Retirement Plans

  • You will receive a letter with information about your benefit, including options, from Fidelity via postal mail.
  • No action is required on your part until you receive the packet. Please allow up to 60 days following your departure to receive information.

Retirees Associations are available at each UM System university, and they advocate for their communities and actively contribute to the welfare of their institutions. If you would like to share your contact information with your local campus retirees association:

  1. Log in to and select "My Personal Details."
  2. Select "UM Employee Data" from the left-hand menu.
  3. Check the checkbox to "share your contact information with your retiree association."
