Lactation Support & Counseling

Pregnant and postpartum women have access to comprehensive lactation support and counseling from trained providers, as well as breastfeeding equipment if they are enrolled in a university medical plan. Lactation support and counseling are usually available through the hospital where your child was delivered or the provider involved in your delivery and do not require a prescription.

Equipment

Medical plan coverage includes coverage for breast pump equipment. Manual breast pumps are covered at no cost when obtained from an in-network durable medical equipment (DME) provider (physician’s prescription required). Manual electric breast pumps may be obtained through an out-of-network DME provider subject to applicable deductible and co-insurance.

Breast pumps do not need to be medically necessary and may be rented or purchased. Rental pumps convert to a purchase after 10 months. Pumps may be ordered up to 30 days before the baby’s due date. National DME providers include:

  • Byram Healthcare: 1-877-773-1972
  • Edgepark Medical Supplies: 1-855-504-2099

Employees, retirees and covered dependents enrolled in University medical plan may obtain diabetic supplies through either the medical or prescription drug portion of their plan, depending on where the supplies are purchased. Medicare-eligible retirees have different options available to them.

Via Medical Coverage

Diabetic supplies obtained through an in-network durable medical equipment (DME) provider are covered under the medical portion of the plan. Coverage is provided at no cost for most medical plans, however, Healthy Savings Plan and Retiree Healthy Savings Plan enrollees are subject to applicable deductible and co-insurance.
